A Tale From Jacob Bannon

I was lucky to see Converge in Cleveland at the Grog Shop this past Monday night. An intense show as always, much more so when they came by Toledo summer of last year. After an amazing set and the showcase of new songs, they decided to close with Concubine.

I decided to run out across the stage and give the night one last crowd dive, but half way there, my foot got caught on Jake’s mic cord, leaving me hopping one footed like a downie. Jake threw a ‘wtf man’ look. Feels bad.

Afterward, getting my vinyl signed, I apologized for my lack of grace, in which he told me a story of Aaron Dalbec, the former additional guitarist of Converge. I cant promise accuracy as I was more than half deaf at the time and people we’re loud leaving.

He told me they were going to go downtown (not sure of the place or time) and see a few shows, some local bands playing. It was during one of the shows that Aaron decided to run up and dive off stage, but when he got up there, he caught every single cord and ripped down every mic stand.

Its cool to know the guys you look up to don’t really care if you fuck up, and are willing to share their times when they once did the same.

Stay gold.

Spinning this as recommended by Bannon.

Indie pop productions require more insight as to the song and lyrics and what kind of feeling the songwriter’s trying to evoke. When you’re recording a metal band you KNOW what feeling they’re trying to evoke. You just think “Satan, Satan, Satan.” When you’re eq’ing the bass, you’re like “Satan, Satan, Satan.” The snare drum - “Satan, Satan.” It’s more the technical challenge of, “How do I achieve the maximum amount of Satan?
